The main problem the petitioners have is that (and bear in mind we've only seen two locations being played out) the graphics are cartoony and too bright and they point to World of Warcraft as the main influence that is "ruining" the Diablo artistic style:
"Cartoon'ish art direction, obviously influenced by the Warcraft universe, Diablo isn't Warcraft."Check out the source petition link for the other complaints. Maybe we should wait for more information before criticising it for petty reasons. Or design a mod when the game is eventually released.

I do wish people would take of
the rose-tinted glasses(well grim'n'dark-tinted anyway).
Seriosly, to all those complaining, you don't want a new Diablo do you? You just want Diablo 2 with better graphics. But every game franchise has variaty. How many Legend of Zelda games ARe exactly alike? And maybe you'll play Diablo 3 and hate it, but thats ok, because guess what? Diablo 2 will still be there. Live and let live. Either way, as the Blizzard team have already explained, the Grim'n'Dark effects people keep demanding arent really compatible with the technology now. And from the previews, it still seems faithfull to Diablo. Big horrifying demons? Cultists killing themelves? Ancient sttues and tunnels? Characters that so far seem a lot more realistic, than Warcraft ones and without and of the Warcraft exaggerated features. Your overanylising things people. Wait for Diablo 3 to ome out, play it and THEN, criticise it if need be. It's not rocket science.
